Glasgow 2026 Legacy: Jambo! Radio Turns Commonwealth Games Coverage into a Training Ground for Young Sports Journalists

August 8, 2026 by Jambo! Radio Scotland

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games may be over, but for a new generation of aspiring sports journalists, reporters and producers at Jambo! Radio Scotland, the journey is only beginning.

Months of planning went into Jambo! Radio Scotland’s coverage of the Games, bringing together an intergenerational team of experienced sports pundits alongside university students, interns, work-experience participants and young people taking their first steps into broadcasting.

The objective went beyond reporting results and medal successes. Jambo! Radio wanted to use one of the world’s major multi-sport events as a real-life learning environment where young people could experience the pace, demands and excitement of sports journalism.

Throughout Glasgow 2026, the team gained practical experience in sports research, reporting, presenting, interviewing, content production and digital media. Working around a live international sporting event allowed participants to put their developing skills into practice while learning from more experienced members of the team.

For Jambo! Radio Scotland, this represents an important part of the Games’ legacy.

“Our mantra is that the future is prepared today,” said Jambo! Radio Scotland founder and CEO George Tah. “Listening to the individual experiences of our young team after the Games has been particularly rewarding. When young people are exposed to an international event of this scale, it can expand their aspirations and help them see where their skills could take them.”

The experience also demonstrated the ability of major sporting events to connect Glasgow’s diverse communities with audiences internationally. Jambo! Radio recorded increased engagement during its Games coverage, including growing interest and new followers from Caribbean island nations.

The station thanked the Glasgow 2026 Organising Committee for its collaboration, particularly Director of Communications Louisa Mahon, and for recognising the role community media can play in connecting major events with local communities.

But Jambo! Radio’s work will not end with Glasgow 2026.

The station has identified a new cohort of aspiring sports journalists, reporters and producers aged 16–24, who will continue receiving training, mentoring and practical opportunities through its pathway programme.

The ambition is to transform the excitement and experience of Glasgow 2026 into something longer lasting: a pathway into broadcasting, journalism, digital production and the wider sports media industry.

For these young people, Glasgow 2026 was not simply a Games they watched. It was a Games they helped to document, communicate and share with the world.
