Attendees at the Awards ceremony in London
The 2026 BCA African Business Book of the Year has been awarded to It’s About Tyme: Banking Beyond Borders by Adrian Saville and Bruce Whitfield, recognising a book that explores banking, entrepreneurship and African business success on the global stage.
The winners received the prestigious award, a trophy and a $10,000 cash prize during a ceremony held at the Institute of Directors on 3 July in London.
Judges praised the book for its honest storytelling and practical business insights, describing it as a compelling account of how an African financial institution expanded beyond national borders. The panel said the book stood out for its engaging narrative, valuable business lessons and significant contribution to African business literature.
Now in its fourth year, the BCA African Business Book of the Year Award celebrates outstanding writing that examines Africa’s economy, leadership and business innovation while encouraging fresh perspectives on the continent’s future.
The event also featured the annual Kay Whiteman Memorial Lecture, delivered by Arunma Oteh, Chair of the Royal African Society. She highlighted Africa’s growing global importance, declaring: “There is no version of a sustainable future that does not run through Africa.”
The runner-up prize went to Making It Big by Femi Otedola, while second runner-up honours were awarded to How We Made It in Africa by Jaco Maritz.
Speaking at the ceremony, Arnold Ekpe said quality business writing is essential to ensuring Africa’s achievements, opportunities and challenges receive the global attention they deserve. Samaila Zubairu added that documenting African success stories helps build confidence and inspires future generations of entrepreneurs. The awards were supported by the Africa Finance Corporation.
