Jambo! Radio Code of Ethics
Updated: Thursday 14th September 2023
At Jambo! Radio, we are driven by a profound commitment to ethical broadcasting and the empowerment of the African and Caribbean heritage communities in Scotland. We recognise that many individuals, especially the young who identify as both Black and Scottish, face unique challenges stemming from personal experiences and the often arduous immigration system. It is our firm belief that responsible media plays a pivotal role in addressing these challenges, fostering inclusivity, and amplifying diverse voices.
1. Accuracy and Truthfulness
- We pledge to be the beacon of accuracy and truthfulness in the media landscape. We understand that misinformation can be harmful and divisive. Therefore, we are dedicated to providing our listeners with accurate, truthful, and reliable information. This commitment spans across our entire spectrum, from news reporting to cultural programming.
2. Fairness and Inclusivity
- We recognise the power of the media to shape narratives and perspectives. Consequently, we are steadfast in our commitment to fairness and inclusivity. Our aim is to provide a platform where all voices within the African and Caribbean heritage communities in Scotland are heard and respected. We actively promote diversity and inclusion in our content and programming.
3. Transparency and Accountability
- Transparency is the cornerstone of our operations. We are committed to openness regarding our decision-making processes, funding sources, and operational practices. We actively encourage feedback from our listeners and stakeholders, and we hold ourselves accountable for our actions and content.
4. Responsible Broadcasting
- We are fully aware of our responsibility as broadcasters. We will not engage in or promote hate speech, discrimination, or any content that may harm or marginalise individuals or groups. Responsible broadcasting is our duty, and we take it seriously.
5. Empowerment and Education
- We believe that knowledge is empowerment. We are dedicated to empowering the African and Caribbean heritage communities in Scotland, particularly the young individuals navigating the complexities of being both Black and Scottish. We provide educational and informative programming that supports personal growth, identity development, and community building.
6. Cultural Sensitivity
- We have the utmost respect for the rich tapestry of cultures and traditions within our communities. Our approach to cultural content is characterised by sensitivity, ensuring that it is represented accurately and respectfully.
7. Privacy and Data Protection
- We take the privacy and data protection of our listeners and stakeholders with the utmost seriousness. We are committed to complying with all relevant data protection laws and maintaining the highest standards in safeguarding personal information.
Our Code of Ethics is not a mere set of guidelines; it is the very foundation upon which Jambo! Radio stands. We hold ourselves to these principles with uncompromising dedication in all our operations, from broadcasting to community engagement. Our ultimate aim is to create a platform that empowers, educates, and unites the African and Caribbean heritage communities in Scotland.
